Heather Anne Mason (nee Traves)
Heather Anne Mason (born Traves) of Huntsville, who passed away at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, December 11, 2021.
Heather grew up in Huntsville and loved this town and it’s people. Her father Percy passed while Heather still attended Huntsville Public School. Her mother Madge raised a wonderful young woman until she, too, passed in 1988.
Growing up on Elm Street in Huntsville, Heather enjoyed Huntsville High School and activities such as figure skating and tormenting her older brother David.
Once, as a young child upset by a scolding from a neighbor, she and a friend put the neighbour’s garden hose through a basement window and opened the faucet. Actions, as they say, speak louder than words. Heather applied the same direct approach to problem solving throughout the rest of her life.
Heather was lucky enough to meet Doug Mason, and they married in September of 1985. Together they enjoyed over 36 years of marriage, building two houses of their own and raising two beautiful daughters. Lindsay Ann, born 1988, and Meghan Lillian, born 1995. Lindsay and her fiancé Adam Scott will marry in September of 2022, and Heather was very fond of Adam, and of Meghan’s partner Joseph DeVries.
A diploma in Fashion Merchandising from Georgian College led to a 23-year career at Flotron’s Huntsville Trading Company on Huntsville’s main street, where Heather eventually managed the ladies wear department and travelled to purchase seasonal clothing lines. Heather loved her work and thoroughly enjoyed making her customers happy. She applied her intense work ethic later on to painting, staining and decorating the homes and cottages that Doug built, always with the goal of satisfying her customers, many of whom became close friends.
Heather volunteered for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Huntsville Business Improvement Area, and Brunel Community Centre. She also assisted elderly people with their personal needs and property care in their homes.
Heather loved the outdoors and travelling, especially with her family. They enjoyed camping, tropical vacations, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, boating, and road trips across the country, among other ventures. Heather was happiest when she was with her husband, her girls, and her two dogs.
Doug, Lindsay and Adam, and Meghan and Joe will love and remember Heather forever. Her zest for life was matched only by her desire to enrich the lives of everyone she knew.
Loved and sadly missed by Lori and Tony and their family.
Remembered by her brother David Traves and his wife Heather and their children and grandchildren.
Aunts and Uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and extended families will all remember Heather’s kindness.
Countless friends and customers will enjoy a memory and share Heather’s happy smile whenever they think of her.
Heather’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses at St. Michael’s Hospital, St Johns rehab division of Sunnybrook Hospital, South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, and Huntsville District Memorial Hospital for their kindness and care. Heather was always made to feel like she was the only person they had to look after.
Thank you as well to the wonderful staff and administrators at Closing the Gap in Huntsville for their excellent care, and to Grant Wager and the staff at Superior Home Healthcare for their kindness and assistance with mobility aids.
Thank you to friends and neighbours who helped with food and company, to keep Heather’s spirits up through a very difficult two years.
The family will hold a private visitation.
Donations to Huntsville Hospital Foundation in honour of Heather would be appreciated.
