Thelma Eunice Laferrière

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of our mother, Thelma Eunice Laferrière (Carr), on November 7, 2023, just a few short weeks after the passing of her husband, our father, Robert. She has gone to join him in eternal life.

Born December 16, 1947, Thelma was the youngest child of Bethuel and Violet Carr (Demarell). She is predeceased by siblings Elmer (Lorna), Bert (Eileen), Nora (Bob) Borgford and leaves behind her brother Len (Carol) and sister Alberta (Ishwar) Saxena as well many brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by her children, Jacqueline (Jay), Paul, and Carl (Sarah) as a loving and devoted mother. Due to her illness, many of her grandchildren missed the opportunity to know her well. Our memories of her will be passed onto them: Alec (Catherine), Daniel, Elliot, Renée, Noah, Jonah and Eli.

Thelma was born into a Christian family and her faith sustained and nourished her throughout her life. Entering adulthood, she started her career as a primary school teacher in Massey, Ontario where she met and later married Robert. With the arrival of their first child, she chose to leave teaching in order to devote her time to raising her family. Throughout the years, she supplemented the family income, working various part-time jobs and later became a real estate agent. Her passion for buying and selling property was unparalleled. With savvy and good judgement, her eye for the potential of “diamond in the rough” investment properties resulted in early retirement and the ability to travel and enjoy several years before her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in her early sixties. Although the final fourteen years of her life brought many challenges and hardships, the care and devotion of Robert and her children cloaked her in great love and support. The family would also like to acknowledge the staff at Muskoka Landing who provided exceptional care in her final years.

At her request, her remains have been cremated. A combined memorial service and reception for Robert and Thelma will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 High Street, Huntsville, Ontario, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 1 p.m. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society (https://alzheimermuskoka.kindful.com) would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy
